• Before 2025 models hit showroom floors, it was alleged that this would be the year of a major redesign. While they did see some changes, they were mostly minor.

The 2025 Explorer was said to be a design departure from 2024 models. While changes from top to bottom were expected, it didn’t happen. However, some cosmetic tweaks were made, including the addition of soft-touch surfaces to the interior. Ford’s Digital Experience was also introduced—it allows you to stream videos, play games via Google Play and surf the web (while parked, of course!). The BlueCruise hands-free driving system is also a recent addition as are design adjustments of the front fascia, grille, headlights, lower air inlets, and tail lights.

In 2025 only four trims are available—the Active (Base), ST-Line, ST, and Platinum, which offers the option of an option black-painted roof.

Active, ST-Line, and Platinum models are powered by a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine generating 300 ponies and 310 pound-feet of torque. The ST is a powerful animal all its own with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6, cranking out 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. (This engine is optional on the Platinum trim.) All engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive as standard and optional all-wheel drive.

The Explorer features the Class III Towing package which includes a trailer hitch wiring harness, and sway control system. Its maximum towing capacity is 5,000 pounds.
